Disney a twisted tale story12/25/2023 ![]() Some of it just felt as though it had no purpose.īut overall it was a good story, an interesting concept. Ursula’s use of alternate magic, what happened with Julia, the little girl Vareet. There are some things I felt could have been made more of. Oddly, it wasn’t exactly boring, it’s just that more than half way through nothing had really happened and yet it was like there was too much going on, everything was just all over the place. A lot of hanging around and no one actually doing anything significant. There’s really too much going backwards and forwards, constantly. The funny thing is the roles have flipped and Eric is now more ignorant than Ariel is. As Ariel sees exactly what her previous choice did to Eric’s kingdom, more than her own, she tries to be more thoughtful about what it is she’s doing and is reluctant to expose anyone else to danger. Now, she has immense power as long as she’s in the sea, but she’s been stung once. It’s noted how she made a reckless decision when she was younger. I never thought he was a butler, he seemed much higher up than that, an adviser of some sort.Īriel is less impulsive. Also, Grimsby is noted as being a butler. Curiously the only animal or creature in The Little Mermaid without a voice. An enchanted Eric cut off from reality an older and maturer Ariel who’s been forced to face the consequences of her actions Sebastian much his old self Flounder still a loyal friend Ursula, still evil. You’ve got all your familiar characters, though many have changed with time and experience. Lets just focus on the story itself once you get past all that. Though why Ariel didn’t blast Ursula is anyone’s guess. The book vaguely tells us that Ariel turned back into a mermaid and fled, what it doesn’t say is whether she took the Trident with her before Ursula could get to it or whether Ursula merely changed her mind. The scene where he exchanged his life happened on the ship. At a guess, the twist happened by Triton appearing too early, just before Ariel’s voice was returned to her, so they were still on the wedding ship. It’s not specified how this didn’t occur. Ursula wanted to take everything from Triton, she wanted control of the sea. This is basically trying to justify what is really an aching big plot hole. Rather than ruling via something stolen and which she has no real right too, she is ruling legally as a Princess by marriage. She’s also ruling on a more legitimate basis. Although this means she has no magic, besides spells she cast whilst still in the water, it serves to make a few painful digs at Ariel. ![]() She had to take the next best thing, and marry Eric, taking control of his kingdom and conquer the land instead of the sea. Ariel didn’t get her voice back and Triton still exchanged his life for hers, but the Trident never got into Ursula’s possession. ![]() So the route to go is that, technically, neither Ariel nor Ursula won. Had Ursula got the Trident and not been defeated, chaos would have reigned, Ariel and Eric probably would have died and there wouldn’t be a story. It’s not the angle most would have considered going, though the more likely path would have been chaos. It was actually fairly good, though the prologue wasn’t a brilliant start for drawing you in. The twist being that Ariel never defeated Ursula. Part of Your World, of course, covers The Little Mermaid. I’ve noted that the books often point out flaws, such as how ridiculous it was to fall in love in a really short space of time. Where the others utterly change the ending of the film, Reflection slipped in a new story between the events on the mountain and arriving at the Emperors palace, meaning that the ending of the story would have actually happened the same. They really are twisted versions, completely removing the perfect Disney element of a story. It seemed to move slowly but was interesting. A Whole New World felt like hard work, then Once Upon a Dream was the same. As Old as Time was the first I ever read and found fairly enjoyable, though it was a strange new experience. My own relationship with the series has been mixed. Disney own the rights and commission writers for each book. This is the fifth book in the series, but only the fourth written by Liz Braswell, as Reflection, a retelling of Mulan, was written by Elizabeth Lim. The Twisted Tales books are not linked into one another, so it doesn’t matter what order you read them in. Each book takes the title of a song in the film it is retelling and which is relevant to the Twisted Tale. Lets recap a few background details: The Twisted Tales are a set of books retelling the plots of Disney films had certain things happened differently.
